The 2026 Virginia Governor’s Cup Awards marked yet more advances for the estimable Virginia wine industry. This year, Virginia wineries submitted a record-breaking number of wines for consideration. Of those wines, 117 wineries and cideries won a total of 224 gold medals altogether after several rounds of sampling by world-class judges.

How the Governor’s Cup Wines are Judged

In the preliminary judging rounds, panels of six judges taste different selections of wines over three days. The schedule helps prevent palate fatigue that could occur if all judges sampled hundreds of wines during a 10-day period. Tastings are conducted single-blind, meaning judges know only the grape variety or category of each wine, not the winery or place of origin.

Wines that advance to the final round are tasted again to determine the 12 with the highest average scores. These wines make up the Governor’s Cup Case. The wine with the highest overall score receives the title of 2025 Governor’s Cup winner, announced at the Virginia Governor’s Cup Gala in March.

Governor’s Cup Gold Wines of 2026

This year’s gold medal-winning wines and ciders represent eight Virginia wine regions and at least 30 grape varieties grown across the state, highlighting the diversity of Virginia’s terroir. Excluding ciders, red blends and red varietal wines dominated the awards, earning 63% of the gold medals.

Among those, red blends—including Meritage blends—received 62 gold medals, accounting for 30% of the total. Cabernet Franc was the top-performing single-varietal wine with 30 gold medals, or 14%. That marks a shift from last year, when Petit Verdot led with 13% of the gold medals; this year, single-varietal Petit Verdot accounted for 5%. In addition to the wines, 11 ciders also earned gold medals in this year’s Virginia Governor’s Cup.

What Makes a Gold Medal Winning Wine?

To receive a gold medal, a wine must receive an average score of 90 points or higher on a 100-point scale. Gold Medal wines are recognized as superior in both character and style, with some being considered among the best wines in the world.

Wines are judged using the same 100-point scale as the other prestigious wine competitions throughout the country. Each judge compiles tasting notes on each wine based on:

  • Appearance (clarity, color, visually observable characteristics)
  • Aroma (clean aromatics, type of aromatics, intensity)
  • Flavor (character of the alcohol, flavor intensity, tannins, body)
  • Overall quality
  • Commercial suitability

A gold medal winner must earn over 90 out of 100 possible points. A wine awarded 95-100 points is considered a “classic,” one of the best wines in the world.

Judges for the 2026 Virginia Governor’s Cup

Beginning in 2024, Virginia wine expert Frank Morgan assumed responsibility for coordinating the judging of the Governor’s Cup. With a decade of experience judging the competition, Morgan saw an opportunity to refine the criteria. Among his key changes, he now selects judges exclusively from wine professionals with a deep knowledge of Virginia wines, ensuring that the unique nuances of the state’s terroir are fully recognized and celebrated.

“It is a privilege to serve as Director of Judging for the Virginia Governor’s Cup wine competition and work with Christina Sandridge, Executive Director of the Virginia Wineries Association, and a great team of volunteers dedicated to delivering a successful competition,” Morgan told us. “The 2026 competition marks another record-setting year, with more wineries participating than ever before. The record number of gold medals this year is a testament to quality gains across the state.”
